St. Louisans protest state takeover of police

Community members with the Hands Off STL coalition traveled to Jefferson City to support the legal efforts challenging the state takeover of St. Louis City’s police department, SLMPD, on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

Jamala Rogers and Mike Milton are plaintiffs in a case against the state, filed June 2025, which claims the State Takeover Law is invalid and violates “the Missouri Constitution’s prohibition on unfunded state mandate of local activities and services…” After filing a similar suit in April 2025, Board of Alderman President Megan Green filed a suit as sole plaintiff in May 2025 asserting a violation of her freedom of speech rights. Last month, St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer joined the push to halt the state takeover, “filing a lawsuit seeking clarity on the city’s legal and financial obligations under the state law.”

Jamala Rogers, who is also a St. Louis American columnist, recently opined about the state takeover in her article, “No to the proposed police budget.”

Hands Off STL is a growing coalition of community members and organizations united in the belief that St. Louisans deserve the power to shape the future of our city.
