State of Emergency returns for parts of Belize City, District after crime spree

By Aaron Humes: As of Friday, May 8, for a period of at least one month, sections of Belize City and the Belize District are under a state of emergency announced by Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam.

The Governor-General proclaimed that “I am satisfied that a public emergency has arisen in the part of Belize consisting of the part of Belize City known as the Southside and part of Belize City on the Northside, and which are specified in Schedule I, and in the parts of the Belize District known as Belize Rural, Ladyville Village, Burrell Boom Village, Fresh Pound Community, Buttercup Estates, Bermudian Landing Village, Lemonal Village, Isabella Bank, Rancho Dolores Village and Double Head Cabbage Village, which are specified in Schedule II, as result of action having been taken or being immediately threatened by any person or body of persons of such a nature and on so extensive a scale as to be likely to endanger the public safety of the specified parts of Belize City and the Belize District…”

Schedule 1 goes on to list most areas of Belize City on both Northside and Southside, while Schedule II lists communities surrounding Ladyville, Burrell Boom, and the lower Belize River Valley.

A number of murders have occurred in these areas in the last few weeks, as well as a major marijuana bust in the Lords’ Bank area.

It is expected that persons thought to be involved will be rounded up and held at the Belize Central Prison while investigations continue into the criminal activity.
