Twelve years after she was found standing beside her poached mother, Satara – the very first white rhino orphan ever rescued from the Kruger National Park – has given birth to her first calf!

Nelspruit, South Africa (21 May 2026) – Twelve years ago, South Africa was in the grip of one of the darkest chapters in its conservation history. That year, 1215 rhinos were killed by poachers. It was the highest number ever recorded in a single year.

Amidst that crisis, a tiny seven-month-old white rhino calf was found standing beside the body of her poached mother in the Kruger National Park. She had no one and nothing left.

Rangers rushed to her side. Kruger’s veterinary teams placed her on life support and stabilising drips, fighting to keep her alive. And then, for the very first time, South African National Parks (SANParks) made a landmark decision not to leave her behind. They would rescue her, rehabilitate her, and give her a future.

That call went to Petronel Nieuwoudt and the incredible team at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary.

The little calf was named Satara, so that she would always carry a connection to her home and where she came from. On 11 March 2014, she became the very first white rhino orphan ever rescued from Kruger National Park and entrusted to Care for Wild.

Now, twelve years later, Satara has given birth to her very first calf!

Satara’s rescue those many years ago marked the beginning of a formal partnership between SANParks and Care for Wild. It was the first Memorandum of Agreement of its kind, built on trust and a true belief that these animals deserved a second chance.

Petronel went to collect Satara from the park herself that day. She never imagined, as she brought that fragile little calf to safety, that Satara would become the first of 135 more rhinos to be rescued.

Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary, based in Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, is the world’s largest orphaned rhino sanctuary. The organisation specialises in the rescue, rehabilitation, rewilding, and ongoing protection of both black and white rhinos, working toward a future where viable, free-ranging rhino populations thrive within protected ecosystems. Every rhino that arrives carries trauma, and every rhino that leaves carries hope.

After years of healing, rehabilitation, and rewilding, Satara has done what so many hoped she one day would. She has become a rhino mom. Her calf, both healthy and safe, was born on 17 May 2026, and the pair are currently living together in an intensive protection zone, where they are monitored and guarded around the clock.

Satara’s calf is the 34th rhino born at Care for Wild, joining a growing generation of wild-born calves who are not inheriting a war, but rather the love and safety of their mothers.

Just weeks ago, we shared the news of Robyn’s calf who became Care for Wild’s 33rd birth. Robyn was another poaching orphan from 2014 who grew up to become a first-time mother. Now Satara has followed in those footsteps.

“For over a decade, the rhino has been seen as a symbol of crisis in South Africa, but the birth of this new rhino life is changing that narrative. No longer inheriting a war against poaching, these calves are wild-born and growing up in the love, safety, and care of their rhino mothers. This brings so much hope to the people of South Africa and the world. Some moments remind us why we never gave up. This is one of them.” says Petronel Nieuwoudt.
