Taiwan is an Independent and Sovereign Country

 “Taiwan is a vibrant democracy. When the world is saying that Taiwan wants to declare Independence, we don’t need to declare independence – Taiwan is already an independent country. No need to declare independence. We will not declare independence. We don’t need it – we will not.”  ~  Taiwanese government official, which perfectly aligns with the mainstream consensus in Taiwan.

TAIWAN / CANADA – The repeated false claims by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) aim to downgrade Taiwan’s sovereignty, take precedence with individuals and other countries to disseminate baseless rhetoric regarding the so-called “one China principle” and United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 in an effort to distort the facts and mislead the international community, are “attempts at authoritarian expansionism.”

Taiwan is a vibrant democracy

Taiwan’s 23.5 million people thrive in a robust, modern and civil society, a vibrant democracy, in a defined area of approximately \(36,193 \text{ km}^2\). This includes the main island of Taiwan, the Penghu archipelago, and several smaller island groups like Kinmen (Quemoy) and Matsu. (Ethnic population, unique language, own currency NT)

Taiwan has a functioning political and administrative structure through legitimate and democratic elections governed by President Lai Ching-te, the Legislative Yuan (113 legislators elected by the people), ministers of government and 17 ministries with the capacity to advance policy and enter into diplomatic relations and establish treaties with like-minded countries.

Taiwan has democratic governance (not military/dictators) in functional branches of government – legislative, executive, and judicial. Taiwan has a free press to inform the public and hold the government accountable.

Taiwan’s government maintains that a formal declaration of independence is unnecessary because it already functions as an independent, sovereign democratic state with its own constitution, military, and government.

The recognition of these criteria represents international legitimacy of a sovereign state, with legal standing globally, not subject to the control of any outside power, fundamental elements of socialism and decorative authoritarian rule.

Taiwan is an independent and sovereign country

“The Republic of China (Taiwan) is an independent and sovereign country, and neither it nor the PRC is subordinate to the other,” MOFA explains. “ These are undeniable objective facts and the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. No attempts to denigrate Taiwan’s sovereign status through erroneous narratives or joint statements can change this indisputable reality.”

MOFA has previously expressed great regret at the PRC government engaging in international collusion to further disseminate erroneous narratives that denigrate Taiwan’s sovereignty and escalate tensions across the Taiwan Strait. And that no number of falsehoods can alter the internationally recognised status quo across the Taiwan Strait.

“Taiwan will continue to enhance its self-defence capabilities, build whole-of-society defense resilience, and work closely with such nations to jointly ensure freedom, openness, peace, and prosperity for Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region,” said MOFA.

“No need to declare independence – We don’t need it. We will not.”

Taiwan is a developed country with civil liberties, healthcare, human development, research and development institutions, rapid economic development and growth, technological advancement, and a robust defence mechanism (The Democratic Shield) that is equally resilient and supported by the whole of society, democratic values of self-preservation. And in the exploratory hemisphere of space (TASA – Embrace the Unknown, Never Stop Exploring).

Some countries and their associates continue to wrongly state that Taiwan was an inalienable part of China.

MOFA Taiwan continues to advise that such “sentiments are baseless, and used to encourage the use of force against Taiwan, thus affecting regional peace and stability, undermining Taiwan’s sovereignty and cloud international understanding.” Moreover, “neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other, and that the PRC has never governed Taiwan. No country has the right or ability to deny the objective fact of Taiwan’s existence.”

International support

Diplomatic allies of Taiwan continue to advocate with their voice and with emphasis (European Parliament recommendation of 20 May 2026 to the Council, the Commission and the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (2025/2167(INI) for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organisations.

Many others maintain unofficial diplomatic ties through representative offices, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO), and other institutions.

US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) publicly reiterated support for Taiwan on May 15, underlining that Congress had always been highly concerned about cross-strait issues and explicitly stating that the US position was that Taiwan needs to be independent and secure.

Other leading members of the US Senate and House of Representatives from both parties have stressed that the United States should fulfill its long-term commitments, promote arms sales, and continue to assist Taiwan in acquiring the necessary defensive capacities to strengthen deterrence.

Manufacturing and technology

Taiwan’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is leading on every front. Taiwan’s first-quarter GDP growth reported a 39-year high of 13.69 percent. Taiwan’s equity market overtook Canada to become the world’s sixth-largest. TSMC accounts for more than 40 percent of the Taiwan Stock Exchange. TSMC has already begun to invest not only in the United States, but in Japan and in Germany.

The capability and quality of manufacturing in Taiwan is of a very high quality. This has now shifted from “Made in Taiwan” to “Made by Taiwan” and “Made with Taiwan.”

According to the statistics, from January to April 2026, 796 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects with a total approved amount of USD 7,308,500,000 were recorded. This represents a 23.99 percent increase in the number of cases, and a 158.08 percent increase in the FDI amount compared with the same period in 2025. Taiwan’s transition highlights economic and manufacturing evolution into innovation and technology, thus becoming a very significant player in the global IC supply chain.

Two years ago, Taiwan did not have a Drone Industry. Now, Thunder Tiger Corp., (8033) is a leading Taiwan-based manufacturer of unmanned systems and integrated solutions listed in Taiwan Stock Exchange, specialising in the development and application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned surface vessels (USVs), and related key technologies, with a global defence and commercial clientele.

Thunder Tiger’s FPV platforms have been approved under the US Department of Defense’s Blue UAS program, underscoring compliance with stringent cybersecurity, supply chain integrity, and non-PRC sourcing requirements—key criteria for allied defense procurement.

In the podcast, ‘Taiwan’s Home-Grown Drone Industry’, Lotta shares how Taipei has stimulated investment in air- and sea-based drones that can prepare the island against a PRC attack.

In global health governance, no one should be left behind. MOFA actively promotes global medical health cooperation and the model of healthcare-driven industrial growth.

Over the years, Taiwan has achieved outstanding results in global health governance (communicable disease prevention and control, universal health insurance, digital health) and assisting allies and friendly countries to enhance medical resilience through transnational medical health cooperation, public health capacity building, and other approaches. And receiving widespread acclaim from the international community for its medical capabilities and democratic values.

Taiwan has introduced the “Healthy Taiwan” vision, placing “driving digital healthcare” at its core. By integrating big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud technologies, the system aims to improve healthcare quality and efficiency while moving toward a new healthcare model centered on holistic, person-centered care.

Acer Medical continues to showcase its latest AI healthcare innovations, “Intelligence in Practice” from clinical research to product development, to implementation and expert service support.

The National Development Council (NDC) launched the Startup Island Taiwan Silicon Valley Hub in January 2025. The cooperative platform connects Taiwan’s innovation strengths with global markets by offering consultations and resource-matching services.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) on May 19 opened the AI Robotics Innovation & Development Center (ARIDC) at the Industrial Technology Research Institute’s (ITRI) Liuja Campus. The center focuses on integrating and validating critical smart robotics technologies. It will actively target four major application sectors: healthcare, logistics, food services, and disaster response, aiming to become a pivotal hub connecting international startups with domestic industries and research institutions to expand Taiwan’s robotics ecosystem.

MOEA also announced the establishment of the Quantum Industry Technology Promotion Office. Economic Minister Kung Ming-hsin noted that quantum computing will succeed artificial intelligence as the next technological revolution and said that Taiwan has three advantages as it enters the market.

First, its semiconductor industry leads the world in R&D and has successfully developed chips that can withstand temperatures as low as -269 degrees Celsius, which are vital for quantum computing.

Second, manufacturers boast extensive experience in semiconductor production and advanced packaging; finally, local businesses excel at integrating different techniques and components into well-functioning systems.

Third, the MOEA has facilitated cooperation between Taiwanese companies and their international counterparts, including the New York state-based SEEQC Inc., and the California-headquartered Rigetti Computing Inc., to jointly develop quantum chips and low-temperature cooling systems, respectively.

Taiwan launches quantum technology office, presented the 2026 Presidential Innovation Award, and advances drone diplomacy

Taiwan is a very dynamic country that recognised the importance of developing its people. Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER), a highly esteemed think tank in Taiwan which holds distinguished international recognition. Taiwan’s development is inextricably linked to Cross-Strait relations characterised by four unchanged commitments – National Sovereignty, Status Quo of Peace and Stability, Parity and Dignity, Healthy and Orderly, and Democratic and Free Way of Life.

In a statement released April 28, MOFA said the ministry is determined to advance drone diplomacy in alignment with President Lai Ching-te’s five trusted industry sectors initiative.

According to the MOFA, Chiang Zhen-wei, chief executive director of the MOFA drone diplomacy task force said Taiwan’s manufacturing capabilities give the country a great advantage in the global drone sector. Amidst the changing geopolitical landscape, drones have become a strategic resource to safeguard national security and industrial resilience.

The MOFA task force will be in charge of facilitating related cooperation with Taiwan’s allies and like-minded partners while building on the success of the ministry’s integrated circuit diplomacy to transform the country into a regional hub in the democratic drone supply chain, Chiang said.

Chiang also analysed the impact of the ongoing wars, global developments and changes in regional security, as well as Taiwan’s pivotal location in the first island chain and the Asia UAV Artificial Intelligence Innovation Application R&D Center.

Taiwan strengths

So yes! Taiwan is an independent and sovereign country, a genuine democracy. Taiwan’s strength relies very much on the trust that has been built with allies, friends and in business.

  • A stable democracy and democratic institutions;
  • Taiwan produces approximately 90 percent of the world’s most advanced semiconductor chips, and has a supply chain competitiveness;
  • Investments and market capitalisation;
  • Human capital, innovation, research and development.
  • Industrial adaptability;
  • Taiwan is a powerhouse with a high degree of stateness. (Taiwan Country Report 2026).

Taiwan has proven to be a trusted team maker that will not copy business secrets and cause nations to be indebted, but will (and has) add value to products and the development of the whole of society, via democratic values.

MOFA continues to deepen relations with diplomatic allies and like-minded countries through integrated diplomacy, public-private partnerships, and Taiwan’s technological strengths. Taiwan reiterates that it will continue to deepen cooperation with all like-minded countries to staunchly defend democracy. Regardless of any economic coercion or diplomatic bullying that Taiwan might face, it will steadfastly maintain its established position, actively engage with the world, and bolster national resilience.

Moreover, Taiwan is willing to collaborate with all nations that support freedom, democracy, and human rights and work to curb authoritarian expansionism, staunchly safeguard the peace and security of the Taiwan Strait, uphold freedom, prosperity, and stability of the Indo-Pacific region.

Thus, irrespective of unfounded perspectives, Taiwan is a country with many successful innovations and a leader on the global stage. Taiwan is a successful country by design, enabling advanced technology, democracy, research and development. It’s a strategy in action!
