One of Saint Lucia’s most influential calypso institutions, the Take Over Tent (TOT), has launched an ambitious slate of celebrations to mark its 45th anniversary, unveiling plans for 45 signature activities while paying tribute to veteran calypsonian Herb Black for his four decades in the artform.

The announcement was made Thursday evening during a media and sponsors’ launch hosted at the showroom of Peter & Company Auto, as the Tent positioned its anniversary celebrations as not only a tribute to its legacy, but a major investment in the future of Saint Lucian culture.

“For nearly half a century, TOT has remained a pillar of culture, expression and community,” Tent Leader Nardiage Charles told patrons, sponsors and cultural stakeholders. She described Herb Black as one of the Tent’s most respected voices, praising his “hard-hitting calypsos, remarkable voice and unwavering loyalty” over the years.

The celebrations form part of a year-long observance designed to highlight TOT’s contribution to Saint Lucian calypso, soca, youth development and cultural preservation.

Tent Manager Cecil Charles revealed that the initiative goes far beyond the traditional carnival season, with activities aimed at nurturing the next generation of performers and creators.

“We are unveiling 45 activities for our 45th anniversary. This observance is not only about celebrating the past, but about investing in the future of the artform and the next generation of Saint Lucian talent,” Charles explained.

Among the initiatives announced are youth mentorship programmes, songwriting camps, junior calypso workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions, community block parties and a mega concert expected to feature 45 artistes.

TOT also plans to stage a four-part production series titled Decades of Dominance, exploring the evolution of Saint Lucian calypso and soca from the 1980s to today’s crossover era.

Another anticipated feature, Clash of Crowns, will pair veteran calypsonians with emerging performers under the theme: “Legends don’t retire, they reload.”

Charles stressed that youth empowerment remains central to the Tent’s long-term mission.

“The goal is to ensure the artform lives on through the next generation. We want young people not only to appreciate calypso and soca, but to understand the business, the writing, the production and the cultural responsibility that comes with it,” he stated.

The launch also highlighted TOT’s growing partnerships with organizations including the Saint Lucia National Archives, the Cuba Humanitarian Solidarity Association of Saint Lucia and the Association of Persons With Autism as part of its wider community outreach efforts.

Representing the Folk Research Centre, Senator Embert Charles praised TOT’s role in preserving Lucian Kaiso and supporting cultural development across generations.

“Many calypsonians associated with this Tent have become ambassadors of the artform both locally and internationally,” he noted, while emphasizing the importance of documenting Saint Lucia’s calypso history through the annual Lucian Kaiso publication.

Meanwhile, Sales and Marketing Manager at Peter & Company Auto, Sherani Augustin, described TOT as more than an entertainment brand.

“This Tent is more than entertainment. It has become a launching pad for Saint Lucian talent and a home for the preservation of our calypso and soca culture,” Augustin remarked.

The launch follows a special anniversary church service held on May 17 and officiated by Monsignor Dr. Patrick Anthony, which reflected on the social, spiritual and cultural influence of calypso in Saint Lucia.

With the 2026 carnival season approaching, TOT’s 45th anniversary programme is expected to become one of the major cultural highlights on the national calendar — blending legacy, mentorship, entertainment and cultural preservation in true Take Over Tent fashion.
