The headteacher of Teryet Secondary School, Dr Justin Yapsoyekwo, and the school bursar, Banis Chebet, have been arrested over allegations of inflating the school’s enrolment figures by 706 students to obtain government funding for non-existent learners.
Yapsoyekwo and Chebet were arrested by a joint security team following allegations that the school has only 147 students, despite school records showing an enrolment of 853.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the inflated enrolment figures allegedly enabled the school to receive about Shs 37 million per term from the government for students who were not enrolled at the school.
Sipi Police spokesperson Fredmark Chesang confirmed the arrests, saying the two suspects are being held at Kapchorwa Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Police are expected to establish how the alleged discrepancies in the enrolment figures were created and whether other officials were involved in the suspected fraud.
