Thunderbirds RFC are officially the 2026 Women’s Rugby Premiership champions after defeating Nile Rapids 18-05.
The Kyadondo ladies defeated Nile Rapids on the last day of the league campaign to lift the trophy at Kyadondo.
A quick try by eventual player of the match Gladys Atim set the pace of the game, which was characterised by Thunderbirds’ dominance in the first half.
Surprise appearances from players like Samiya Ayikoru and Agnes Nakuya boosted the home team to a 15-00 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Maureen Akello extended the lead to 18 points, a difference that proved insurmountable for the Rapids, despite a try from fullback Minat Namono.

The Thunderbirds have now broken the dominance of the Black Pearls, who had won the Women’s League four consecutive times.
Additionally, the Thunderbirds won the 2025 National 7s title, which was held by the Avengers.
This league win is the first major title of the 2026 rugby calendar, with the National 7s and Uganda Cup yet to come.
For the Rapids, getting to this point in the league and making themselves worthy contenders is something they should be proud of. They are back-to-back Uganda Cup champions and have since gotten comfortable with both the 7s and 15s variations of the game.
It is just a matter of time until they break the ceiling on the National 7s and 15s titles.
