UWP Eyes Early 2027 Convention After Committee Chair Quits Over Alleged Delays

United Workers Party member and former government minister Sarah Flood-Beaubrun says the opposition is aiming to hold its national convention in early 2027, with the party leadership among the positions eligible members can contest.

The timeline follows Ezechiel Joseph’s resignation as Convention Committee chairman. As Saint Lucia Daily Post reported on October 29, Joseph said he had understood that the convention would take place before the end of 2026. In an October 28 letter to UWP Chairman Therold Prudent, he alleged that unnamed individuals were deliberately delaying the vote after the findings of an independent review of the 2025 election defeat had been discussed with the party’s leadership.

Flood-Beaubrun said the party held a retreat to consider the review’s recommendations and determine what changes it needed to make to its structure after losing the 2021 and 2025 general elections.

She said the proposals would go to the National Council, with any constitutional changes requiring ratification by the Island Council. Constituency branches would then elect officers under the new structure, followed by zonal meetings and the national convention.

“There’s a clear roadmap, which we are already walking, which will lead us to convention early in the new year with a new structure, a newly built ship, and that is when we put the captain and the crew in the ship,” Flood-Beaubrun said.

She pledged a free and fair vote and said members could put themselves forward for any executive position, including political leader, subject to party rules. Recalling her own leadership contest against Allen Chastanet, she said confidence in the process was why she publicly backed him immediately after losing.

Flood-Beaubrun gave no exact date for the convention and did not directly address Joseph’s allegation of deliberate delay.
