Wendy’s Announcing Store Closings in 2026

Wendy’s has announced it will close between 298 and 358 U.S. locations during the first half of 2026. These closures represent approximately 5% to 6% of its domestic footprint.

Key Details of the Closures

  • Reason for Closures: The company is targeting “consistently underperforming” and “outdated” restaurants that interim CEO Ken Cook described as a “drag” on franchisee financial performance.
  • Strategic Goal: The move is part of “Project Fresh,” a turnaround strategy intended to modernize the brand and reinvest in higher-performing sites.
  • Location List: Wendy’s has not released a public list of specific stores slated for closure. Decisions are being made gradually on a “restaurant by restaurant” basis in collaboration with franchisees.
  • Current Progress: As of February 2026, the company confirmed that 28 locations were already shuttered in the final quarter of 2025.

Financial Context

The announcement follows a challenging period for the chain, including an 11.3% drop in U.S. same-store sales in the fourth quarter of 2025. While Wendy’s is shrinking its U.S. footprint, its international business has shown growth, with system-wide sales up over 8% in 2025.

To help customers adjust, Wendy’s has recently pivoted back to “everyday value” by expanding its Biggie Deals menu with $4, $6, and $8 options.
