Western Cape wraps up voluntary repatriation operation

The Western Cape Government has concluded its voluntary repatriation operation for foreign nationals.

The programme assisted people who voluntarily chose to return to their countries of origin.

The operation followed the 30 June anti-illegal immigration marches, which prompted foreign nationals to seek voluntary repatriation through the Department of Home Affairs’ Epping office in Cape Town.

On Sunday, the province confirmed the operation had ended.

Everyone who reported to municipal facilities and the Department of Home Affairs’ Epping office in Cape Town has now departed.

Western Cape completes repatriation operation

The operation brought together all three spheres of government.

Municipalities worked alongside national government departments.

Law enforcement agencies also assisted.

Humanitarian organisations and faith-based partners provided support throughout the operation.

Premier Alan Winde thanked everyone involved.

“This operation demonstrated what can be achieved when all spheres of government, humanitarian organisations, religious institutions, transport providers and local communities work together towards a common humanitarian objective.”

Winde also thanked the mediators.

He said they helped defuse tensions and prevent unrest.

The Premier also acknowledged the Western Cape Government’s International Relations Directorate.

He said officials engaged with affected foreign missions during the operation.

Western Cape voluntary repatriation: Municipal transport ends

Temporary support facilities have closed and normal operations have resumed.

The provincial government confirmed municipalities will not provide further transport for repatriation.

It also dismissed reports that free transport services will continue.

Foreign nationals needing assistance should contact their embassies or consulates and follow the Department of Home Affairs’ normal immigration processes.

Government thanks businesses and communities

The Western Cape Government thanked businesses and communities near the temporary support facilities.

It acknowledged the inconvenience caused during the operation.

The province thanked residents for their patience and cooperation.

Although the transport phase has ended, government departments will continue monitoring the situation.

Municipalities will do the same.

Any humanitarian, safety or operational concerns will be managed through normal service delivery channels.
