Zikalala extended his condolences to Mahlaba’s family, friends, comrades and colleagues.

He said Mahlaba dedicated much of his public life to creating opportunities for young people through education.

“Like the current leadership of SAUS, he fought for the expansion of student accommodation and courageously led campaigns against student exclusions.”

Zikalala said Mahlaba believed quality education should be accessible to all South Africans.

Mahlaba held several senior leadership roles

Mahlaba previously served as Executive Mayor of Newcastle Local Municipality before becoming KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture.

At the time of his death, he served on the ANC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Task Team.

Zikalala said Mahlaba’s leadership and commitment to public service would leave a lasting impact.

“Words cannot fully express the grief and sense of loss we feel at this difficult time.”
