Workers, union members urged to wear black in opposition to proposed BTL-Smart acquisition

By Zoila Palma:  Workers, union members and concerned Belizeans are being called to wear black on Friday, August 14, as part of a peaceful demonstration against the proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications, which operates under the Smart brand, by Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL).

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) is urging participants to “WEAR BLACK” and “STAND TOGETHER” as a show of solidarity and opposition to the proposed transaction.

NTUCB noted that the issue extends beyond the two telecommunications companies and involves workers, consumers, competition, investment and the future of Belize’s telecommunications sector.

They are calling on Belizeans to demonstrate that they are paying attention to decisions that could have wider implications for the economy and workforce.

They are encouraging participants to take part peacefully and “MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD” by wearing black on Friday.
