Budding volleyball players between the ages of eight and 17 will be given an opportunity to hone their skills at the 2026 instalment of the Chargers Volleyball Summer Volleyball Camp, which serves off on June 22nd in Liberta.
Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Chargers Volleyball Director Franz deFreitas said the camp was designed to create meaningful opportunities for young people during the summer period.
“We wait too late to teach children the sport so there’s not a lot of youth development in volleyball. Even though there are a lot of opportunities in the world, we can’t take advantage of them because by the time we upskill a child, they pass the window to get into college. They pass the window to go professional. So, what Chargers is, is an organization that is developing children so we start at about eight years old and that is where our camp is,” he said.
The camp, which runs from June 22 to August 14 at the Liberta Playing Field, is open to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17 and combines volleyball skills training with mentorship, fitness, excursions, team-building activities and personal development.
As part of the camp, a three-day tournament involving six local teams and a Division II team out of Alaska, the Alaska Fireweed, will be contested at the volleyball association’s indoor facility at the YMCA Sports Complex from June 25-27.
Former national player and father of one of the touring Alaska players, Shawn Williams, said the team is looking forward to the experience.
“We didn’t stack a team up to come down here and embarrass people. We have a good group of girls that are about having a good time. They want to come here and show their love for volleyball. It’s not about playing of the game, it’s more about the love of the game. So these young kids can see why they play the game, what they do,” he said.
The camp will combine volleyball skills training with mentorship, fitness, excursions, team-building activities and personal development. The weekly registration fee is EC$25 per participant, with transportation available on excursion days for an additional EC$20.
