OPPOSITION FreeZim Congress leader Joseph Makamba Busha has launched a scathing attack on proposed constitutional amendments being pushed by the ruling party under President Emmerson Mnangagwa, accusing Zanu PF of attempting to entrench its grip on power and destroy what is left of the country.
The proposed changes, which have already been approved by Cabinet, include clauses that would increase presidential and parliamentary terms from the current five years to seven, the suspension of the 2028 elections and allow the President to be elected by Parliament.
Busha told NewZimbabwe.com Friday that the proposed changes to the Constitution were illegitimate and designed to serve narrow party interests.
“Zanu PF and the President have never respected the people of Zimbabwe and the constitution. First there was never and tomorrow there will be no Vision 2030 for Zimbabwe,
“This is a Zanu PF agenda to preserve Zanu PF itself, to preserve what has been looted and lastly to destroy what is left of the country making everyone a beggar,” Busha said.
The opposition activist insisted that no amendments outside a referendum are legitimate, warning that Zimbabweans should not allow themselves to be misled like in the 2017 coup.
“No amendments outside a referendum are legitimate. Zimbabwe cannot be misled like in 2017 coup. Elections must be held in 2028, let us join and work together against the rise of dictatorship and extremism in our country and elsewhere in the world.
“Elections must be held in 2028. Let’s join and work together against the rise of dictatorship and extremism in our country and elsewhere in the world,” Busha added.
Busha’s remarks come amid mounting resistance from opposition parties and civic groups over controversial constitutional amendment proposals currently before Parliament.
Many opposition leaders and activists have called for nationwide protests against the proposed changes, warning that they threaten democratic governance and constitutionalism.
Meanwhile, government has also warned that any attempt to hold protests against the proposed amendments will be dealt with decisively.
