The clash comes just days after Sundowns secured their second CAF Champions League title and added another golden star to the badge.

Pretoria, South Africa (29 May 2026) – The wait is finally over for Mamelodi Sundowns fans.

After weeks of excitement and build-up, the newly crowned African champions will officially welcome German side RB Leipzig to Pretoria later today in what promises to be one of the biggest club football occasions on South African soil in recent years.

The Red Bull Diski Last Namba clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium is not just another friendly match either. For many football fans, it feels like another reminder of just how far Sundowns have come on the continental stage.

Fresh off winning their second CAF Champions League title and adding another golden star above the club badge, Masandawana now have the chance to test themselves against one of Europe’s top clubs in front of a home crowd.

And coach Miguel Cardoso made it clear that his side is embracing the occasion rather than being intimidated by it.

“Regarding ourselves, tomorrow we need to obviously understand that we’ve made something that is life-changing. We carry a badge that has two golden stars,” Cardoso said ahead of the match.

Cardoso also insisted that Sundowns want to play with courage and confidence against the Bundesliga outfit.

“We know that we don’t have a lot of players in the squad, but we know that we want to make a beautiful game, and we want to compete,” he said.

Former Sundowns coach and 1996 AFCON-winning captain Neil Tovey believes the South African giants are more than capable of giving Leipzig a proper challenge.

“I believe Sundowns will give RB Leipzig a really good go,” Tovey said.

He also praised the importance of European teams travelling to Africa, describing the occasion as a major moment for football on the continent.

For Sundowns, tonight’s clash arrives at the perfect time. The club is still riding high after ending a decade-long wait for another CAF Champions League title.

RB Leipzig, meanwhile, arrives in South Africa with a strong travelling squad that includes experienced names like Peter Gulacsi, Lukas Klostermann and Johan Bakayoko.

An incredible season for Masandawana, proving that they belong on big stages.
