Airtel Africa Posts Record Results for FY2026, with 24% Revenue Growth and 183.5 million Customers
East Africa, including Uganda, drives strong performance as mobile money subscribers surge 21% to 54 million and data traffic nearly doubles across the network.
Airtel Africa has reported record financial results for FY2026, driven by strong data consumption, mobile money growth and rising smartphone adoption across its African markets.
The group recorded constant-currency revenue growth of 24.0%, the highest in its history, with reported revenues climbing 29.5% to $6.415 billion, up from $4.955 billion in the previous year. Underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) reached $3.162 billion, up 37.2% in reported currency, with margins expanding to 49.3%, and briefly crossing the 50% mark in the final quarter. Profit after tax more than doubled to $813 million, compared to $328 million in FY2025.
East Africa, including Uganda, remained a key growth market for Airtel Africa, generating revenues of 2.192 billion dollars, an 18.9 percent increase in reported currency and 13.8 percent growth in constant currency, while the regional customer base grew by 8.7 percent to 84.3 million subscribers.
The Ugandan shilling was among the currencies that appreciated against the US dollar during the year, contributing to the higher reported-currency growth relative to constant-currency figures. Data customers in East Africa grew 15.7% to 36.5 million, while data traffic jumped 50.3%, reflecting a region hungry for connectivity. Smartphone penetration reached 46.6%, with data usage per customer climbing to 8.0 GB per month, up 28% year-on-year.
The East Africa region also continued to roll out 5G technology, with over 2,200 sites now 5G-enabled across five key markets.
Airtel Money, the group’s mobile financial services arm, was among the standout performers of the year, with the subscriber base growing 21.3% to 54.1 million customers across the group.
In a landmark partnership announced in December 2025, Airtel Africa became the first mobile operator in Africa to collaborate with SpaceX to deliver Starlink Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity across its 14 markets, a move designed to bridge the digital divide in the most remote communities across its network.
In March 2025, Airtel Africa and MTN also announced network infrastructure sharing agreements in Uganda and Nigeria, a step the company says will expand coverage and lower the cost of delivering connectivity.
With a customer base of 183.5 million across 14 African markets, data as its largest revenue stream, and Airtel Money gaining ground as a trusted financial services platform, Airtel Africa enters FY2027 with momentum and an expanded investment agenda that puts Uganda and East Africa at the centre of its ambitions.
Sunil Taldar, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, attributed the record performance to the company’s focused strategy and its embrace of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, to serve customers better.
“This year delivered a very strong performance across both operating and financial metrics, reflecting the attractive industry fundamentals and structural growth drivers across our footprint. Adoption of new digital technologies and AI has been pivotal in unlocking growth opportunities and driving efficiencies, with wide-ranging rollouts enhancing customer experience through site-level network optimization, streamlined onboarding and more intuitive digital journeys enabling greater personalization. This focused strategy has contributed to a further 22% increase in smartphone customers to 91 million, driving an almost 50% increase in data traffic and, together with another strong Airtel Money performance, underpinned record constant-currency revenue growth of 24.0%.” Taldar commented.
