Algeria fought from a goal down to overcome Jordan 2-1 in Group J during the on-going 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday morning at the Estadio Da Baia De Sao Francisco.
Nizar Mahmoud Ahmed Al-Rashdan gave Jordan the first half lead in the 36th minute for their first ever goal at the FIFA World Cup.
Algeria gallantly recovered to score in the closing stanza through Ahmed Nadhir Benhouali and Amine Ferid Gouiri in the 69th and 82nd minutes respectively.
Al-Rashdan who features for Qatar Sports Club opened the scoring business in the 36th minute for the first half lead.
Benhouali of Gyor in the Hungary premier league leveled the matters in the 69th minute with a great header off a teasing Riyad Mahrez’s corner kick.
Olympique de Marseille’s Gouiri secured maximum points for Algeria after a VAR confirmation.


The victory pushes Algeria to three points and keeps their hopes for the round of 32 qualification much alive.
Earlier in the same group; Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 at the Dalla Stadium.
38-year-old Lionel Andres Messi scored both goals for Argentina, taking his tournament tally to 4 goals.
Messi also became the all-time leading goal scorer in the FIFA World Cup with 18 goals.
France’s Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haarland (Norway) have also scored four goals apiece.
Next Group J matches:
Group J will climax on the 28th June 2026 with the last two matches; all kicking off at the same time.
Argentina will take on Jordan at the Dallas stadium whilst Austria face Algeria at the Kansas City stadium, Kansas City.
Argentina leads the pool with six points, Austria and Algeria have three points each as Jordan is eliminated.
So far, six countries are confirmed for the round of 32 stage.
The reigning champions Argentina, France, Norway, Germany, Mexico and the United States of America (USA) have already booked their berths to the first phase of the knock out round with a match to play.
