An Agitated Kevin Hart Breaks Silence as George Floyd Family Condemns Roast Joke

*Kevin Hart is responding to the backlash surrounding Netflix’s “The Roast of Kevin Hart,” acknowledging that the event’s most controversial joke offended many viewers while defending the anything-goes nature of roast comedy.

Appearing on “The Breakfast Club” on May 26, Hart addressed criticism sparked by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s George Floyd joke during the May 10 Netflix special. The remark quickly became the defining flashpoint of the roast, drawing condemnation from Floyd’s family, activists, and many viewers.

“The George Floyd joke, it wasn’t a tasteful joke to our culture, to our audience,” Hart said.

Still, Hart made clear he was not surprised by the joke or the comedian who delivered it.

“I wasn’t shocked. That’s what they do. Go look at the Tom Brady one. That’s what they do. It happens every year when they do a roast. It’s not a new agenda (and) it’s not a new approach to comedy,” he said.

“It’s Tony Hinchcliffe. Like, I don’t expect less, I don’t expect more.”

George Floyd’s Family Pushes Back

The backlash extended far beyond entertainment circles.

A spokesperson for The Gianna and George Floyd Foundation reportedly described the joke as “sad for the culture,” while George Floyd’s brother publicly called it “totally disrespectful.” Family members and supporters also expressed outrage over the use of Floyd’s death as comedic material.

Civil rights advocates in Minneapolis joined calls for accountability. Attorney and activist Nekima Levy Armstrong reportedly said the joke made her “sick to my stomach,” arguing that Floyd’s killing should never be reduced to a punchline.

For critics, the issue is not simply whether the joke was funny. They argue that references to Floyd’s death carry a weight that differs from traditional roast targets such as celebrity scandals, personal failures or sports rivalries.

Hart Says Crossing Lines Is the Point

Despite acknowledging the joke’s lack of taste, Hart repeatedly defended the roast format itself.

“That my friend is what the f*ck a roast is supposed to be — hard-hitting, relentless jokes of no consequence,” Hart said.

He also praised the performers who participated.

“You go hard, you go home. Shout out to every comedian that came on that stage because they all understood the assignment.”

When challenged about whether Hinchcliffe went too far, Hart suggested that pushing boundaries is built into the genre.

“I feel like you’re saying going too far is the point,” he said.

His comments echoed the position taken by many roast fans, who argue that audiences understand the format beforehand and should expect provocative material.

Why Hart Keeps Pointing to Tom Brady’s Roast

Hart repeatedly referenced Netflix’s 2024 “The Roast of Tom Brady” as evidence that controversial jokes have long been part of roast culture.

While that special generated criticism over personal attacks and uncomfortable celebrity moments, critics argue “The Roast of Kevin Hart” crossed into different territory by invoking George Floyd, whose death became a symbol of a global racial justice movement. The backlash quickly expanded beyond entertainment circles to include civil rights leaders, activists and Floyd’s family.

Supporters counter that the distinction misses the central premise of a roast, where no topic is supposed to be off limits.

Hart Rejects Responsibility for Other Comedians’ Material

Hart also pushed back against criticism directed at him personally.

“I didn’t f*cking say it,” he said, emphasizing that he was the subject of the roast rather than the comedian who delivered the joke.

At the same time, he acknowledged that controversial comedy often comes with consequences.

“Free speech is not free. You still gotta deal with the consequences.”

That statement largely sums up Hart’s position. He is not arguing that audiences must approve of every joke. Instead, he believes comedians have the freedom to make controversial material and audiences have the freedom to criticize it.

“If you don’t like that kind of content, don’t watch the next roast,” Hart said.

Whether viewers see the controversy as a free-speech debate or a question of respect, the backlash has ensured that one joke—not the celebration of Hart’s career—has become the defining legacy of Netflix’s latest roast.
