*The family of influencer Ashlee Jenae is continuing to challenge the official findings surrounding her death after authorities in Zanzibar, Tanzania, ruled that she died by suicide and formally closed their investigation.
Ashlee Jenae, whose legal name was Ashly Robinson, died on April 9 while vacationing in Zanzibar during a trip celebrating her recent engagement. She was 31.
On June 4, Zanzibar police announced that their investigation concluded Robinson died from cerebral hypoxia caused by strangulation after she was found hanging inside a wardrobe area of a luxury resort villa. Authorities said evidence collected during the investigation, including information recovered from her phone, supported their conclusion that the death was a suicide, The Citizen, a local outlet is reporting.
Police also cleared her fiancé, Joe McCann, of wrongdoing.
Family Rejects Official Conclusion
Robinson’s family has strongly disputed the suicide ruling from the beginning, describing the circumstances surrounding her death as suspicious.
Her parents have repeatedly said they saw no signs that Robinson was struggling with depression or contemplating suicide. Instead, they have described her as excited about her future, her recent engagement and the next chapter of her life.
The family has also raised concerns about what they describe as inconsistencies in the investigation, including questions about the scene, communication from authorities and the timeline surrounding notification of her death.
One of the issues that continues to trouble relatives is an alleged 11-hour delay before they were notified about Robinson’s death. Family members have also questioned whether the physical evidence at the scene fully supports the official conclusion.
Despite the official closure of the case, relatives continue to seek additional answers and have called for greater transparency regarding the evidence reviewed by investigators.

Legal Challenges Remain
One of the biggest obstacles facing the family is jurisdiction.
Because Robinson died in Tanzania and local authorities have officially closed the case, her relatives have limited legal avenues available to compel a new investigation.
Deaths involving U.S. citizens overseas often create complex legal challenges because foreign authorities maintain primary control over evidence, witnesses and investigative findings. Unless significant new evidence emerges, reopening a closed investigation can be difficult.
The family has sought assistance through diplomatic channels while also exploring independent avenues to review the circumstances surrounding Robinson’s death.
Relatives have publicly stated that they want access to additional materials connected to the investigation, including records that could help them better understand how authorities reached their conclusion.
Public Reaction Has Been Divided
The case has generated significant attention online, particularly among Robinson’s followers and within Black social media communities.
Many supporters have echoed the family’s concerns and continue to question the official findings. Calls for “Justice for Ashlee Jenae” have circulated widely across social media platforms as supporters demand additional scrutiny of the investigation.
Others have urged caution, pointing to the findings released by Tanzanian authorities and warning against speculation unsupported by evidence.
The case has also sparked broader conversations about travel safety, international investigations involving American citizens and the challenges families face when a loved one dies overseas.

A Family Still Seeking Answers
Although authorities consider the matter closed, Robinson’s family has made it clear that they do not view the case as resolved.
Relatives continue to question the official timeline, the circumstances surrounding her death and the evidence cited by investigators. They have also expressed frustration over what they describe as limited communication following the tragedy.
For now, the gap between the official findings and the family’s beliefs remains at the center of the controversy.
While Tanzanian authorities say their investigation is complete, Robinson’s loved ones continue to push for additional clarity, transparency and answers about the death of a woman they say was looking forward to the future.
