Barbados- Counselors to visit school following shooting incident

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados government says counselors will be deployed to the Eden Lodge Nursery School on Wednesday following a shooting incident outside the facility on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Education said that while the incident did not take place on the school compound, “its proximity to the school has led the Ministry, out of an abundance of caution after consultation with the Barbados Police Service, to take the decision to close Eden Lodge Nursery School.”

It said that counselors will be deployed to the school on Wednesday ‘to provide support and counseling for members of staff who may have been affected by the incident’, and that the school is scheduled to reopen on Thursday, ‘ at which time students will also receive counseling and emotional support as needed’.

Police said that a lone assailant approached a man and fired several gunshots. The target of the attack managed to escape. While there were no deaths or injuries, the proximity of the violence to a school has ignited outrage among area residents and parents.

“The shooter, whoever they are, they don’t care about man, woman, or child,” one resident told the BARBADOS TODAAY online publication, adding that “I lost for words because these children were in the nursery. To know I have my grandson in Year Two there, this is nonsense.

“I plead for the Madam Prime Minister to do something about this crime. Something has to be done when you see them do something this drastic,” the unidentified resident added.

President of the Barbados National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (BNCPTA), Nicole Brathwaite, “condemned this shooting in the strongest terms,” adding, “this is not just unfortunate; this is unacceptable.”

The BNCPTA has also called on the public to transition from shock to action, advocating for a national effort to purge violence from the spaces where children live and learn.

“We call on all parents and citizens to stay vigilant and join us in demanding safer communities. Our children deserve nothing less.”

So far, no one has been arrested.
