Belize Solid Waste Management Authority concludes stakeholder meeting for Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund Technical Mission on Waste Management

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA), under the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, concluded a week-long technical mission with the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF) on Friday, July 17, 2026.

The mission focused on assessing Belize’s solid and medical waste management systems and identifying opportunities to strengthen the country’s waste management infrastructure.

From July 13 to 17, the Taiwan ICDF delegation worked alongside national stakeholders and visited several key facilities, including Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan, Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, Belize Waste Control Limited, the Belize City Transfer Station, the Regional Sanitary Landfill, and transfer stations in Placencia and Punta Gorda.

The visits provided an opportunity to assess existing systems and exchange knowledge with local technical teams.

The closing stakeholder meeting was attended by Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management Orlando Habet, who reaffirmed the Government of Belize’s commitment to advancing sustainable waste management through innovation, collaboration and international partnerships.

BSWaMA also expressed appreciation to the Government of Taiwan and the Taiwan ICDF delegation for their continued support and technical expertise.

Preliminary findings and recommendations from the mission are expected to provide a foundation for future collaboration as Belize works to modernize its waste management systems, strengthen environmental protection and safeguard public health.

The initiative also brought together representatives from government ministries, healthcare institutions, the private sector and other stakeholders in support of efforts to build a cleaner and more resilient Belize.
