Introduction / Backstory
Sikila was born out of a personal connection to sickle cell disease, and a recognition of how much of the condition is managed outside of clinical settings, often without structured support.
Patients and families are left to track symptoms, recognise patterns, and advocate for themselves in critical moments, frequently relying on memory in situations where accuracy directly impacts the quality of care they receive.
Why this innovation is needed
There is a clear disconnect between clinical care and everyday patient experience.
For many people living with sickle cell, important information such as pain episodes, fatigue, hydration, and medication adherence is not consistently captured or easily communicated. This makes it harder to identify patterns early, manage the condition proactively, or have informed conversations with healthcare professionals.
As a result, care often becomes reactive, with avoidable escalation between clinical touchpoints, placing additional strain on both patients and healthcare systems.
What Sikila does
Sikila provides a structured way for patients to log symptoms, track medication and hydration, and build a consistent, longitudinal record of their health over time.
By enabling patients to better understand their condition, recognise early warning signs, and take a more active role in day-to-day management, Sikila supports more informed clinical interactions and has the potential to reduce unnecessary hospital visits and associated system costs over time.
Current stage
Sikila is now live on iOS and Android, with early adoption across key markets where sickle cell is prevalent, including the UK, Nigeria, France and India, alongside initial clinician-led pilots to validate engagement and real-world use.
