By Zoila Palma: Today, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that a case of the New World screwworm (NWS) may have been detected in South Texas.
According to reports, the sample is at the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa, for testing.
“We have already activated personnel on the ground and are working with local partners,” USDA said.
The parasite, which lays eggs in the wounds or orifices of animals, can be fatal for livestock.
Experts say the NWS has the dangerous potential to wreak havoc on the cattle industry in Texas. The USDA announced in April that the presence of NWS was just 62 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border.
