COAS reaffirms Nigerian Army’s resolve to defeat terrorism, banditry

The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to combating terrorism, banditry and other security threats across the country through enhanced professionalism, operational effectiveness and joint security collaboration.

Shaibu stated this on Monday while declaring open the Chief of Army Staff First Bi-Annual Conference 2026 at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre in Abuja.

The conference brought together principal staff officers, formation commanders, heads of military establishments, senior officers, regimental sergeant majors and representatives of other security agencies to deliberate on the country’s security situation and operational strategies.

The army chief said troops had continued to record operational successes in various theatres, particularly in the North-East, North-West and North-Central regions.

According to him, soldiers have demonstrated courage, resilience and professionalism in ongoing counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations despite difficult operational conditions.

Shaibu said the Nigerian Army remains focused on protecting the country’s sovereignty and creating a secure environment for socio-economic activities to thrive.

He, however, acknowledged that the military had experienced setbacks in some operations, stressing that such challenges would not weaken the resolve of troops in confronting criminal elements threatening national security.

“Our journey has not been without setbacks, but the Nigerian Army remains resolute and committed to addressing all security challenges confronting our dear nation,” he said.

The COAS noted that the changing nature of security threats requires innovative approaches, realistic operational assessments and stronger coordination among security agencies.

He explained that the conference was organised to review ongoing military operations, assess operational challenges and develop practical strategies to improve operational performance.

Shaibu reiterated his command philosophy of building a more professional, combat-ready and adaptable army capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment.

He also disclosed that Army Headquarters had intensified support for troops through improved logistics, realistic training exercises and enhanced welfare initiatives.

The COAS further stressed the importance of discipline, loyalty and professionalism, urging officers and soldiers to maintain high standards and strict adherence to operational rules of engagement.

He commended troops for their sacrifices and patriotism in defending the country and assured them of continued support from Army Headquarters and the Federal Government.
