Winter is here. And while some of us can easily reach for something cosy to shield us from the cold, the learners of Jeppe High School Girls have been hard at work to wrap the most vulnerable members of society in dignity and care.
Johannesburg, South Africa (18 May 2026) – The chill of the colder season has already snuck up on us. And while most of us have already started reaching for our fluffy slippers, warm robes and cosy blankets, the learners of Jeppe High School for Girls have been working way ahead of the winter – focusing their energy on looking out for those who don’t have the privilege of simply grabbing a warm item from the closet.
In between school work and a demanding curriculum, these dedicated learners have spent the past couple of months knitting and crocheting beautiful, warm blankets as part of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela initiative.
What began as a simple call to the public to knit blankets honouring the spirit of Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of public service has grown into a heartwarming worldwide movement, wrapping the most vulnerable members of society in dignity and care.

Last week, with arms piled high with beautifully crafted blankets, the Jeppe girls visited the St. Giles Association to share that warmth, wrapping the residents living with physical disabilities in comfort and love.
“St. Giles Association provides a caring and supportive environment that promotes dignity, independence, and quality of life for its residents. The visit was a heartwarming experience that reflected compassion, kindness, and the true spirit of giving back,” Jeppe High School for Girls said.
Images shared from the special visit show the young philanthropists distributing the colourful blankets and spending time with the residents.
Moved by their act of giving back, the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela page also extended its heartfelt appreciation to the incredible learners and school staff for pouring so much love, care, and creativity into every stitch.
“Seeing these beautiful handmade blankets shared with the residents of St. Giles Association is a powerful reminder of what can happen when compassion and community come together. Your kindness has not only brought warmth but also comfort, dignity, and joy. Thank you for keeping Madiba’s spirit alive through meaningful acts of service and generosity. We are so proud to have you as part of the 67 Blankets family.”
A huge well done to these Jeppe Girls for doing a really good thing and going out of your way to ensure others aren’t left in the cold this winter.
