The Dennery Falcons Athletics Club spread Christmas cheer to needy individuals in the community on Christmas Eve. This was achieved through the distribution of hampers.
Club administrators said that the programme aimed to teach student-athletes the values of civic responsibility and community spirit.
The initiative was made possible through a collaboration with Rubis Saint Lucia and Gary Gustave.
Kevin Mathurin, the president of Dennery Falcons, indicated that the importance of the initiative “lies in developing the ethos of community”.
“We live in a very individualistic society which is ‘all about me’,” he told St. Lucia Times. “We tend to forget about ‘us’. A shift away from the ‘I’ paradigm to the ‘us paradigm’ is required in sports and in life. This serves not only as a sports lesson but also a life lesson to our athletes.”
The Dennery Falcons club is still in its infancy. The seven-month-old programme intends for the gift-giving to be more than a one-off.
“As we grow as a body towards stability, we aim to create a culture in the club grounded in responsibility development. Building strong relationships with partners like Rubis will make this sustainable,” Mathurin said.
