In the pits of winter, Dr Elsa, a vet at Cluny Animal Trust, will be taking the plunge for the animals who rely on her.
Fouriesburg, South Africa (01 June 2026) – For four years now, Dr Elsa, a veterinarian at Cluny Animal Trust, has poured her heart into caring for the sick, needy, and vulnerable animals that pass through the welfare organisation’s doors.
“Those who know her know just how hard she works. Whether she is treating sick and injured animals, performing surgeries, or going the extra mile for those who have no one else, she gives her all every single day,” Cluny shares.
Above and beyond her daily work as a vet, she bravely faces the icy waters at Arpa Dam each year alongside Cluny supporters to raise funds for the organisation. Cluny calls it the Polar Bear Plunge.
“Every year, our incredible Dr Elsa braves the icy waters of the Polar Bear Plunge to help raise much-needed funds for the animals in our care.”

This year, Dr Elsa has set an ambitious goal. She’s aiming to raise R40,000 towards the construction of a dedicated isolation ward for sick animals.
Having an isolation ward means that when an animal is admitted to Cluny with a contagious illness, they have a safe space to rest and recover without putting the other furry residents at risk. It allows staff to keep a close eye on patients needing extra love and attention while the rest of the clinic carries on safely.
“This dedicated space will allow us to safely care for animals with infectious diseases and provide them with the best possible chance of recovery while protecting the rest of the animals in our care.”
Last year’s Polar Bear Plunge was a massive success, with 58 swimmers who took the plunge, cheered on by over 200 supporters who showed up on the day!
This year on the 4th of July, Dr Elsa, alongside a brave crew of fellow polar bears, will once again be taking on the icy challenge at Arpa Dam.
Cluny has put the call out, encouraging the community to sponsor Dr Elsa in her mission to make a difference.
“So come on, let’s get behind Dr Elsa! If she is willing to jump into freezing water for the animals, surely we can help by sponsoring her effort. No donation is too small, and every contribution will make a difference.”
You can show your support by donating, committing to the plunge yourself, or simply showing up to cheer everyone on. Entry is R100 along with a donation of dog or cat food. Find out more here.
“Together, we can help build a brighter, healthier future for the animals who need us most.”
