Geneva: CNDH Chairman Reviews Mauritania’s Efforts To Protect Migrants Before Human Rights Council

A delegation from the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), led by its chairman, Mr. El Bekaye Abdelmalek, took part in the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The delegation attended the presentation of the UN Special Rapporteur’s report on the human rights of migrants in Mauritania, followed by the interactive dialogue.

The chairman stated that the Commission agrees with the report’s assessment of Mauritania’s progress in protecting the rights of irregular migrants, particularly through strengthening the legal framework and cooperation with international partners. He also stressed the importance of continuing efforts to protect the most vulnerable groups, including women, children, and asylum seekers.

He explained that the Commission’s field teams had not recorded systematic violations of migrants’ rights, attacks on their property, or other abuses against them. Instead, they observed particular attention being given to safeguarding migrants’ rights in reception and rescue centers.

In concluding his remarks, the chairman called for stronger prevention, monitoring, and grievance mechanisms throughout all stages of migration. He also urged increased international support to enable transit and host countries, including Mauritania, to address the challenges of irregular migration while ensuring the highest levels of protection for the rights of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.
