‘I don’t go around villages announcing my travels’ – Mnangagwa defends secret Belarus trip

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has hit back at critics questioning his recent unannounced trip abroad, describing himself as a “King” who does not go around notifying people of his travel plans and instead moves according to his own schedule.

Mnangagwa quietly slipped out of the country last Wednesday night without the usual airport fanfare and in the absence of senior government officials, including his deputies and cabinet ministers, who traditionally see him off on official foreign visits.

He travelled to Minsk, Belarus, where he held talks with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko before returning to Zimbabwe on Saturday night.

Belarusian media reported that the visit was a short working trip during which the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and the implementation of a roadmap for strategic cooperation and partnership covering the period 2026 to 2030.

Addressing journalists at the State House on Monday, Mnangagwa dismissed suggestions that he owed the public an explanation or prior notice of his travels.

“When I go out I don’t go to the villages to say, ‘I’m now leaving.’ They get to be told that the President has travelled,” Mnangagwa said.

“I should go around villages saying, I’m now travelling. Who does that? The king will embark on a trip if his time to travel says so.”

His unexplained absence comes as Parliament prepares to debate the Constitutional Amendment (No. 3) Bill, which seeks to extend his second and final term in office to 2030.
