By Zoila Palma: Twenty-two countries have adopted a declaration calling for artificial intelligence to remain under human direction, oversight and control, while urging stronger international cooperation to manage the risks posed by rapidly developing AI systems.
The declaration was adopted on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly this week, Politico reports.
The countries acknowledged AI’s potential to improve lives, advance science and strengthen economies, but warned that increasingly powerful AI models could create serious safety and security risks if not properly managed. The declaration calls for AI companies to implement transparent safety protocols, including pre-deployment testing and independent evaluations.
The initiative also proposes stronger international standards, greater transparency and shared reporting of serious AI safety incidents.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb, one of the declaration’s organizers, said he hopes the effort will eventually bring the United States and China on board, emphasizing that “we need human intervention, so humans need to be in charge.”
Neither the United States nor China signed the declaration, which comes ahead of a planned meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Stubb said potential risks include AI-assisted bioweapons, cyberattacks and autonomous weapons, while stressing that the benefits of AI could be “much higher” if the technology is used responsibly, including in areas such as disease eradication, productivity and access to information.
