By Zoila Palma: Tropical Depression Cristina is moving northwestward toward the coast of El Salvador and is expected to bring continued heavy rainfall to portions of Central America through Thursday.
As of 3:00 p.m. CST, the center of the system was located about 80 miles south-southeast of San Salvador, El Salvador, and about 155 miles southeast of Puerto San Jose, Guatemala. The depression was moving northwest at 5 mph, a motion that is forecast to continue through Thursday.
The Government of Honduras has discontinued the Tropical Storm Warning for its Pacific coast, while the Government of El Salvador has downgraded its Tropical Storm Warning to a Tropical Storm Watch for the country’s Pacific coastline.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) say Cristina is expected to approach the coast of El Salvador this evening before moving inland across El Salvador overnight and into southern Guatemala on Thursday.
Maximum sustained winds remain near 35 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is expected before landfall, and Cristina is forecast to dissipate over Guatemala on Thursday.
However, the system is expected to produce 4 to 8 inches of rainfall, with isolated maximum amounts of up to 12 inches across coastal areas of Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala through Thursday night.
