Iran, US to Sign Agreement on Friday

Iran and the US are set to sign an agreement on Friday that could potentially see the Strait of Hormuz reopened to maritime traffic, according to an article published by the Associated Press today.

The two countries reportedly came to an understanding earlier today, and their representatives will meet in Switzerland to make the agreement official, AP quoted Pakistani mediators as saying.

Iranian deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, has confirmed the agreement on state television, while US leader Donald Trump has reportedly ordered an end to his country’s naval blockade of Hormuz.

If it goes through, the deal could see the resumption of oil and natural gas shipments from the Gulf. However, Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon and US objections to Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium remain outstanding issues that could derail the fragile agreement.
