*A long-dormant case involving the killing of Jam Master Jay has taken a significant step forward after a defendant admitted his role in the events surrounding the 2002 shooting.
Jay Bryant, 52, entered a guilty plea in federal court in Brooklyn, acknowledging his involvement in the incident that led to the rap icon’s death, ABC News reports. Prosecutors say he was not the shooter but played a supporting role that helped enable the attack. He now faces a possible sentence of 15 to 20 years in prison.
“Today’s guilty plea reflects the dedication of law enforcement and prosecutors who never stopped working to bring accountability for the victim and his family,” stated ATF New York Special Agent in Charge DiGirolamo.
“Justice in the murder of Jam Master Jay has been pursued with determination and resolve for more than two decades. The defendant’s role in facilitating access for the killers was integral to this crime,” DiGirolamo said.
Authorities allege Bryant assisted the operation by helping two other men gain entry to a recording studio in Queens. The studio, located on Merrick Boulevard in Jamaica, became the site of the killing after the attackers entered the building. Investigators say Bryant’s role involved facilitating access through a restricted exit point, which allowed the other individuals to move inside without detection. Once inside, the situation escalated into violence that resulted in Jam Master Jay being shot at close range.
Prosecutors have described the motive as stemming from a drug-related business arrangement involving a large cocaine shipment. According to court records, Jam Master Jay had previously removed the defendants from a distribution opportunity, a decision investigators say triggered the deadly retaliation.
The hip-hop pioneer, born Jason Mizell, was widely known as a founding member of Run-D.M.C. and played a key role in shaping early hip-hop culture. His death in the studio shocked the music industry and remained unsolved for years.
The investigation eventually led to charges against multiple individuals. Two co-defendants, Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington, were arrested years later and convicted, though Jordan’s conviction was later overturned and is now being appealed by prosecutors.
