For six seasons, Karl Urban has brought chaos, rage, and brutal charisma to Billy Butcher on the hit superhero satire The Boys. But as the series continues pushing its characters into darker territory, Urban says Butcher’s motivations have evolved far beyond personal revenge.
In an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Urban reflected on how Butcher’s worldview has shifted over the course of the show, particularly as his hatred for Supes becomes increasingly ideological.
“Butcher has spent years fueled by revenge,” BGN asks. “Is there a moment this season where he pauses to consider the consequences of his actions? Or is it all still instinct at this point?”
Urban explained that while revenge defined Butcher early on, the character’s mission eventually transformed into something much larger and more dangerous.
“I think the interesting thing about the evolution of Butcher is, like in season one when we were first introduced to the character, he was solely fixated on revenge,” Urban said. “But I think in season 3, he really had a shift when he recognized that these Supes were actually an existential threat.”
That realization fundamentally changed Butcher’s goals. What began as a deeply personal vendetta against Homelander became a crusade against all Supes.
“So it was more than just getting back at Homelander,” Urban continued. “His goal shifted from taking out one of them to taking out all of them.”
It’s a chilling evolution for a character who has always operated in morally gray territory. Butcher’s willingness to blur ethical lines has long been one of the most compelling aspects of the series, especially as The Boys consistently asks audiences to question who the real villains are.
Urban believes that despite Butcher’s increasingly extreme outlook, there’s still something undeniably human driving him and that’s hope.
“I think hope is a central theme,” Urban shared. “Even for a character like Butcher who’s really transformed into someone who wants to commit genocide against what he perceives to be an existential threat.”

That contradiction is exactly what keeps the character fascinating. Butcher may be consumed by rage, but he remains fiercely committed to what he believes is the only path forward.
“One of the attributes that I love about him is he actually never personally gives up hope that he will succeed, that they will succeed,” Urban said. “And in that, you have to admire the dogmatic, relentless nature of the character.”
It’s that relentless drive that has made Billy Butcher one of modern television’s most unpredictable antiheroes. Whether audiences see him as a savior, a villain, or something in between, Urban continues to ground the character in a raw emotional intensity that keeps fans invested season after season.
As The Boys barrels toward its endgame, Butcher’s war against Supes appears more personal and more catastrophic than ever. And if Urban’s comments are any indication, the character still believes the fight is worth everything, no matter the cost.
The series finale of The Boys is currently streaming on Prime Video.
