Jorge Rosales wins convention, eyes historic third term as Benque Mayor

By Zoila Palma:  Incumbent Mayor Jorge Rosales has secured the PUP’s mayoral candidacy for the 2027 municipal elections after defeating Jenny Martinez at the party’s convention in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Sunday.

Rosales received 458 votes, edging Martinez, who polled 449 votes in a closely contested race.

The victory puts Rosales on course to seek an unprecedented third consecutive term as Mayor of Benque Viejo del Carmen.

If successful in the 2027 municipal elections, Rosales would make history as the first mayor in the border towns to serve three consecutive terms, further extending his tenure in local government.

Rosales first entered the mayoral race in 2020 after years of working in the construction industry and community development.

Born on March 7, 1973, he is the eldest of 12 children of Irene and Marcos Rosales. He attended Mount Carmel Primary School, Mopan Technical High School and later Belize Technical College before establishing his own construction company.

As Mayor, Rosales has continued to promote municipal services and development initiatives in Benque Viejo, working alongside the town council on projects aimed at improving the community.

His latest convention victory now gives him the opportunity to return to voters in 2027 and ask for another term, with the potential to make history by becoming the first mayor of the border towns to serve three consecutive terms.
