B: Lloyd’s All-Stars – Dread Dub
White had been around music for a while before she stepped into the spotlight, but 1974 was the year it all clicked. That’s when she recorded ‘Dread Out Deh’ with producer Lloyd ‘Spiderman’ Campbell, who built a strong reputation working with numerous reggae artists before his passing in 2016. The track hit hard on the island right away, and the UK wasn’t far behind, with Attack picking it up for a 1975 release.
What makes her vocal performance so compelling is the intensity behind it. This isn’t just singing, it’s a warning. White is speaking directly to the social tension and harsh conditions gripping Kingston at the time, and you feel every word of it.
The riddim itself is built by Skin, Flesh & Bones, and it’s one you’ll recognize if you know your roots. That piano riff locked in with the trombone is the kind of combination that just works, riding on top of a bass line that rolls and pushes the whole thing forward. The same riddim surfaces on the Itals cut Time Will Tell and Dr. Alimentado’s Dread Bongo Natty. And the B-side? Pure class. The dub version doesn’t bury itself in effects for the sake of it. Instead it plays with them, tasteful and deliberate, while the riddim keeps galloping underneath.
Sophisticated work, done right.
