Manor Gardens Swaps Uniforms and Raises Funds to Help a Wynberg Girls’ Shine Internationally!

When a Durban school shows up in a big way for a Cape Town school! Manor Gardens Primary School recently swapped out their uniforms for a colourful book character dress-up day to raise funds to help four talented Wynberg Girls Junior learners reach their international dreams in New Zealand.

Durban, South Africa (07 May 2026) – A little over a month ago, we shared an amazing story about four girls of Wynberg Girls’ Junior School who share a passion for stories that runs so deep, it secured them an opportunity to compete and win first place at the Kids’ Lit Quiz South Africa!

Now they have been invited to New Zealand to compete in the World Championships. And while this comes at a cost, one school -all the way in Durban- generously stepped up to help them raise the necessary funds for their big trip!

Manor Gardens Primary School came second in this year’s South African finals of the Kids Lit Quiz competition. The Durban school has competed in the event Quiz for twenty-one years and has always loved the experience.

Having been the first South African school to win the international competition in New Zealand in 2011, they thought to help another fellow school experience this excitement too!

“Manor Gardens Primary School is a small school with a big heart. We have always encouraged a strong culture of reading,” shares educator Judith Sibson.

“Manor Gardens has achieved significant success nationally, winning the South African finals in 2011, 2015, 2018 and 2023 and travelling overseas to participate in the World Finals. This year, two teams from Durban qualified for the National Round in Cape Town. Westville Senior Primary and Manor Gardens travelled to Cape Town on 14 March, and Manor Gardens came second to Wynberg Girls’ Junior by just one question.”

With the World Champs happening in July, Judith shared that the school understands well what it takes to raise an enormous amount of money in a short space of time.

To support Wynberg Girls’ in reaching their fundraising goal, Manor Gardens celebrated World Book Day on 23 April with a character dress-up day, raising vital funds to send four talented learners to the global stage.

“Our school looked absolutely magical. Somehow, the characters didn’t stay in their books – they wandered straight into our corridors! From brave heroes to mischievous villains (and a few surprises in between), the effort and creativity were incredible. It was a day full of imagination, laughter, and a little bit of bookish chaos… just the way we like it.”

And all the fun drew to quite a happy ending, with R5,000 raised for Wynberg Girls’ Junior School!

“We are hoping to start a trend where all participating schools support each other in a spirit of collegiality and the shared love of reading. Make South Africa proud, Wynberg Girls’ Junior School,” an excited Judith wishes the team.

Now, that is the kind of camaraderie and Ubuntu you just cannot make up! We are so proud of how the Manor Gardens Primary community has shown up for another school across the country, ensuring they, too, can take their place on the global stage and show the world just how bright and talented our young people are!
