Many older persons continue to suffer in silence: MEC Matooane

The Gauteng Social Development Department says many elderly people are continuing to suffer in silence.

It says they endure abuse from people they know.

The department’s statement comes as the world observes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The day raises awareness on the abuse, neglect and exploitation of elderly people.

Spokesperson for the department’s MEC Dloze Matooane says, “Far too many older persons continue to suffer in silence. Elder abuse manifests in many forms, including violence, emotional and psychological abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, abandonment and violations of their fundamental human rights.”

“In many cases, the perpetrators are individuals known and entrusted by the elderly. As the Gauteng Department of Social Development, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting older persons and strengthening programmes.”
