Mauritania has granted amnesty and sentence reductions to nine prisoners following a series of ideological review sessions with inmates convicted in extremism-related cases, as part of the country’s long-running strategy to counter radicalization and promote reintegration.
In a statement, the presidency said three prisoners received a full pardon covering the remainder of their prison terms, as well as fines and court fees, while six others had their original sentences commuted to the time they had already served.
The presidency said the measures followed scholarly dialogue sessions led by Mauritanian Islamic scholars under the direction of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The discussions resulted in several inmates publicly renouncing extremist ideology, expressing remorse for the harm caused to the state and society, and pledging to reintegrate peacefully into public life.
According to the statement, the panel of scholars unanimously concluded that the beneficiaries had fulfilled the conditions required for repentance and ideological revision.
A judicial source told Mauritanian media that the prisoners who completed the review process will be released in two phases once the remaining legal procedures are finalized.
The source added that those benefiting from the measures include El Khedim Ould Semman, regarded as one of the most prominent Salafist figures inside the prison system.
However, six other inmates who also signed declarations of repentance—including individuals convicted in cases involving the killing of foreign nationals and members of the security forces—will not be released at this stage.
Mauritania has for years combined security measures with religious dialogue and rehabilitation programs aimed at encouraging extremist detainees to abandon radical ideologies and reintegrate into society.
