Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja says contributions being made during the ongoing post-election review meetings will form part of a report the electoral body will produce on the September 16 General Election.
Speaking yesterday in Lilongwe during the opening of a day-long review that has brought together representatives of political parties and independent presidential candidates who contested in the election, she said MEC is conducting the review throughout June and will thereafter compile all submissions and recommendations.
Mtalimanja, a judge of the High Court of Malawi, said the platform provides an opportunity for political parties and independent candidates to share their experiences and perspectives on the conduct of the polls.

“Findings from the stakeholders will culminate into a report of the 2025 General Election but also it is going to inform whatever administrative and legal reforms that the commission is going to put in place in liaison and consultations with all the relevant stakeholders for purposes of strengthening the institutional capacity of the commission as well as our stakeholders as we move in the 2030 electoral cycle,” she said.
Centre for Multiparty Democracy chairperson Ben Chakhame said political parties have raised several issues that require clarification and urgent legal reforms.
He said the time has come for parties to express their views during the review process rather than waiting until the last minute as was the case during preparations for the 2025 elections.
Chakhame said parties will seek legal reforms that will guide use of technologies in the polls such as biometric voter verification and registration.
He also pointed out the need for legal reform that would clearly define the roles of MEC and National Registration Bureau (NRB) in the polls learning, from the previous elections.
One of the independent presidential hopefuls in the September poll Smart Swira said during the election, the environment turned hostile for independents with the system favouring candidates aligned to parties.
Some of the participants who attended the meeting included independent candidates Thoko Banda and Adil Chilungo.
Other political parties are represented by senior officials including directors of elections.
