By Zoila Palma: On May 29, 2026, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management (MSDCCSWM), in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) officially handed over a Polyclinic to the Ministry of Health and Wellness and a Hurricane Shelter to the community of Duck Run 1 Village in the Cayo District, with a combined value of $1,536,687.70.
These donations are part of the “Building Climate Change Resilience and Social Integration of Displaced People in Settlements of Western Belize” project.
Launched in February 2022, this joint initiative between the Government of Belize and the IOM, funded by the European Union with a grant of BZ$4,600,000, aims to enhance resilience in six Western Belize communities: Santa Familia, Billy White, Los Tambos, Duck Run 1, Duck Run 2, and Duck Run 3.
Project components include the construction of 5 hurricane shelters/community centers, upgrades to water systems in three communities, the installation of culverts and drainage in two communities, procurement of a water bowser and firefighting equipment, capacity building to Community Health Workers, and a polyclinic with basic medical equipment for the facility.
The inauguration ceremony marks the completion of the final two deliverables, including both a polyclinic and hurricane shelter.
The Ministry noted that together, all deliverables under this project contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, including SDGs 6, 11, 15, and 17, as well as the Global Compact for Migration Objectives 1, 2, 8, and 16.
