The rainy season is no joke and BEL wants Belizeans prepared before the next big storm knocks out the power

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): With both the Atlantic Hurricane Season and Belize’s rainy season now underway, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is reminding customers what to expect when severe weather causes power outages and how to report service disruptions quickly and efficiently.

According to BEL, heavy rainfall, strong winds and lightning associated with seasonal weather systems can damage power line equipment and lead to outages in communities across the country. However, the company says customers should understand that a temporary loss of power during a storm is not always a sign of a major problem.

BEL explains that its electrical protection system is designed to automatically respond when a fault is detected on a power line. When that happens, specialized protection devices may briefly interrupt power while determining the cause of the disturbance.

That process helps distinguish between minor incidents, such as a tree branch making temporary contact with a power line before falling away, and more serious faults that require repair crews to be dispatched.

The company says these protection measures are designed to safeguard customers, their homes and electrical appliances while helping BEL maintain a reliable and sustainable energy supply during the storm season.

Customers experiencing a power outage are being encouraged to report it immediately through the BEL 24/7 mobile app or by calling the company’s toll-free number at 0-800-235-2273.

BEL is also reminding the public that severe weather conditions may affect response times. However, the company says all reported outages will be addressed as quickly as possible once conditions are safe for crews to respond.
