It’s been more than a week since city officials ordered most of the shopping center to close.

Moreno Valley Mall resolves two more code violations, leaving three

Remaining code violations at the Moreno Valley Mall have dropped from five to three, as of Friday evening, Feb. 27, a city official said.

Moreno Valley City Attorney Steve Quintanilla said in an email that only three outstanding life-safety and fire-protection violations are left for mall management to resolve before the mall can reopen.

“The remaining pending violations include items related to the mall’s fire alarm system, smoke control system and fire doors,” Quintanilla wrote.

The city closed the 87-acre shopping center to the public after business on Thursday, Feb. 19, to address alleged fire code violations, halting operations at most of its storefronts. Nine critical violations led the city to force the mall’s closure.

The resolved violations include the mall’s fire sprinkler system, fire standpipe system, fire and smoke dampers, emergency generator, emergency lighting and emergency exit lighting, Quintanilla’s email states.

Earlier Friday, city officials announced they had offered to hire and oversee a contractor to fix the mall’s issues in hopes of getting it reopened as quickly as possible. If mall operators accept the proposal, Moreno Valley would levy a special assessment on the mall to ensure the city is reimbursed for repairs.
