MTN Nigeria has pushed back against concerns over the cost of mobile data services, arguing that data prices in the country remain among the most affordable globally despite recent tariff adjustments.
The telecommunications company made the assertion during its “Data on Trial” event in Lagos, a public engagement initiative created to address customer complaints surrounding data consumption, particularly concerns about rapid depletion and perceived inconsistencies in usage patterns.
Designed as an interactive forum, the event brought together network specialists, technology experts, and consumers to examine how data is consumed across devices and applications. Through open discussions and technical demonstrations, MTN sought to shed light on the factors that contribute to increased data usage.
According to the operator, Nigeria continues to rank among the world’s lowest-cost mobile data markets, with rates remaining competitive compared to several countries across Africa. The company maintained that subscribers still receive significant value from available data bundles, even after the tariff revision approved by regulators in 2025.
The debate over data pricing intensified following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s approval of a 50 percent tariff increase in January 2025, the first major telecom price review in more than a decade. While operators have argued that the adjustment was necessary to offset rising operational costs and support network expansion, consumer groups and labour unions have criticized the move, citing its impact on household spending.
In response to growing concerns about data management, MTN announced plans to launch a new customer-facing data monitoring platform before the end of June 2026. The platform will provide subscribers with real-time visibility into their data consumption, allowing them to identify which applications, services, or connected devices are responsible for the highest usage levels.
The solution is also expected to offer detailed analytics on streaming activity, hotspot usage, background application processes, and other factors that influence overall consumption. During demonstrations at the event, the company highlighted how background software updates and app activity can consume significant amounts of data without users being fully aware.
MTN said the platform is currently being refined through testing and customer feedback and will be rolled out commercially once development is complete. The initiative forms part of the company’s broader effort to improve transparency and give customers greater control over their digital experiences.
The operator further noted that rising data consumption is being driven by increasing smartphone adoption, growing use of digital platforms, remote work trends, video streaming, and expanding participation in the digital economy. To help customers manage usage more effectively, MTN encouraged subscribers to take advantage of existing monitoring tools and data management resources available on its network.
