Murder of Jamal Samuels suspected to be linked to internal gang rivalry; police act against reprisals

By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a shooting incident that left a 29-year-old man dead on Thursday, likely as a result of gang rivalry.

On Thursday night, May 7, about 8:20 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the Barbara Harris area of Belize City. Upon arrival, they were informed that 29-year-old Jamal Samuels had been shot and was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Initial investigations revealed that Samuels was sitting outside his residence along with several other male persons when a vehicle stopped nearby and three persons exited and fired shots towards the group, resulting in Samuels’ fatal injury.

Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith reported during Friday’s press briefing, “Video footage from the Crime Fusion Center are being reviewed to see how they can advance the ongoing investigation… [The motive] is not clear, however, we suspect that this incident is as a consequence of the internal rift that exists in the Bakaland area. I will also say that [Samuels] is known [to] police having been charged just last year for drug trafficking.”

Police have suggested the possibility of a link between the killing, the second of three incidents on Thursday, and the previous shooting of Hubert Baptist and one other man on the Philip Goldson Highway a few days earlier. According to Sr. Supt. Reymundo Reyes, OC Eastern Division, “At the present moment since the incident happened from last night we engaged our operational teams within the area with an effort to prevent incidents from happening due to that. We knew form the beginning when we had the incident of Mr Baptist on the Phillip Goldson Highway, that retaliation was possible. From then, we activated operations within that area. So that is what we are continuing to target known persons that might cause havoc within the area of Martins.”
