Reigning men’s 100 meters national champion, Dwayne Fleming, is focusing on execution in his pursuit to defend his title during this year’s National Track & Field Championships slated for June 20th and 21st at the YASCO Sports Complex.

Speaking ahead of the Saturday’s opening day of competition, Fleming told the Good Morning Jojo Sport Show he will however, focus on the longer former of the sprints.

“As the reigning champion, I just want to go in there and execute the race and to hopefully defend the title. If it comes, it comes. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. The most important race I’m focusing on this national is the 200, because the 200 is for my coach. The 100 is for me, so I just go out there, execute what me and my coach have been working on throughout the season, which is the first part of my race. I will go out there and run and see how it goes,” he said.

“I said I didn’t run many 200 metres for the season, and I didn’t have to work much on my 200, because my coach was strengthening me. Every time I run a 200, I run a fast 200, so I’m just excited to run the 200, because I know that I can run faster, and me and my coach talk, and we are both happy to run the 200,” he added.

Senior national athletes, Joella Lloyd and Cejhae Greene, will miss this year’s championships due to injury.

Public Relations Officer for the Antigua and Barbuda Athletic Association (ABAA), Kesswin Anthony, explained that both athletes are on island but are being guarded as they look forward to a number of regional and international meets.

“Joella is actually out for the season. Cejhae is not out for the season; he’s just not competing at nationals. He has some races after nationals that he can prove his fitness but Joella is actually out for the season with an injury, based on the advice of the doctors in the US and her physiotherapist and her coach. She was looking forward to the Commonwealth Games, the CAC Games – these games for her that she needs to go and actually win a medal, place herself on the podium to actually get that contract that you’re looking for,” he said.

Action will start at 3:00 p.m. daily and carries an entrance fee of $20 per adult and $10 per child. A limited amount of preferred parking will be made available which also allows holders to drive into the venue.
