Walking into the meet and greet for the new series coming to Netflix on May 14th, Nemesis, one thing became clear almost immediately: this isn’t your typical crime drama. Yes, there’s action. Yes, there’s tension. But beneath it all, this series is really about people and how they think, how they hurt, and how they justify the choices they make.
Created by Courtney A. Kemp, Nemesis follows two men on opposite sides of the law, setting the stage for a high-stakes clash between a criminal and a detective. But after speaking with the cast, it’s obvious the story goes much deeper than good versus bad.
For Cleopatra Coleman, her character represents a powerful woman navigating grief and change in real time. Rather than portraying strength in a predictable way, she leans into the complexity of it. “Strong women hurt too,” she shared, highlighting a version of resilience that doesn’t always look polished or perfect. It’s that emotional nuance that makes her character feel real and relatable.
Y’Lan Noel echoed a similar sentiment when it comes to how the characters are approached. In a series that blurs moral lines, he made it clear that labeling someone as a “villain” isn’t that simple. Instead, he focuses on understanding the humanity behind the character, not judging it. And honestly, that’s what makes Nemesis interesting, simply because the audience is left to decide who’s right, who’s wrong, and if that line even exists at all.
That same idea carried into conversations with Matthew Law and Gabrielle Dennis, who both emphasized reflection. Their characters aren’t just meant to entertain; they’re meant to mirror real-life decisions. Whether it’s learning from a character’s mistakes or seeing parts of yourself in their journey, expressing how the show creates space for both accountability and understanding. Gabrielle says it well when she states that sometimes characters serve as a reminder to “make better choices, while other times they affirm that you’re already on the right path.”
And while the themes run deep, the cast didn’t lose sight of one key thing, this show is meant to be enjoyed. With eight episodes that feel like “eight one-hour movies,” Nemesis promises a binge-worthy experience filled with twists, emotional stakes, and moments that will leave viewers wanting more. The kind of show where every episode pulls you in just a little deeper.
What stands out most is how intentional the series feels. This comes from the layered characters, to the conversations. Nemesis doesn’t tell you what to think. It lets you decide. And in a world where everything isn’t always black and white, that will be exactly what makes this series worth watching.
