Rwanda’s Police Volleyball Club continued their imperious form at the African Club Championship, brushing aside Nigeria Customs in a straight-sets masterclass (25-21, 25-16, 25-21).
Yet, despite the clinical nature of the victory, head coach Fred Musoni is making it clear: satisfaction is the enemy of progress.
While the team celebrated a dominant performance, the spotlight fell on star player Gideon Angiro, whose explosive form has been a cornerstone of Police VC’s success so far.
But for Musoni, good is not enough for a player of Angiro’s calibre.
Speaking after the match, Musoni delivered a message of “tough love” to his standout attacker, signalling that the bar for excellence has been raised.
“Gideon Angiro is a significant player with considerable potential,” Musoni told the press. “However, I need to keep telling him that he has to aim higher or choose consistency. I don’t entertain average performance, so I am happy with what he is giving us so far but there is room for improvement.”
The coach’s comments serve as a challenge to Angiro to evolve from a “positive player” into a dominant continental force.
Despite the public challenge, the relationship between the tactician and his star remains one of mutual respect. Musoni highlighted Angiro’s coachability as the key factor that will allow the player to reach the next level.
“He is a positive player and I enjoy working with him. He listens and is always ready to adjust,” Musoni added. “I will keep pushing him because I have a lot of hope in him. I am sure he can take us higher.”
The victory over Nigeria Customs was a statement of intent. Police VC controlled the tempo from the opening serve, with the 25-16 scoreline in the second set highlighting a gulf in class between the two sides.
The win cements Police’s status as a serious contender in this year’s tournament, driven by a rigid defensive structure and an offence that thrives on the very consistency Musoni is demanding.
As the tournament moves into the quarterfinals, all eyes will be on Angiro to see if he can answer his coach’s call. If Musoni succeeds in pushing his star man beyond average, the rest of the continent may find Police VC impossible to stop.
