RC calls for orderly commercial trading spaces

ILEMELA: ILEMELA Municipal Council has been directed to establish properly planned auction and trading areas to improve the business environment, protect public infrastructure and strengthen urban cleanliness in the municipality.

Mwanza Regional Commissioner, CP Salum Hamduni issued the directive yesterday during a meeting with Ilemela Municipal Council leaders, calling for immediate action to organise areas used for auctions and small-scale trading.

He said the current auction site should be relocated to a suitable area with essential infrastructure and convenient access for traders and the public.

CP Hamduni warned that allowing auctions and other commercial activities to continue in informal locations could interfere with urban planning, roads and pedestrian walkways while undermining environmental hygiene.

“The Ilemela auctions should be moved to a different location; auctions should not be taking place just anywhere, including on roads and pathways,” he said.

He directed council officials to identify and prepare an alternative site before relocating the activities, ensuring that necessary infrastructure is available to support traders and customers.

The regional commissioner also called for specific areas to be designated for small-scale traders, saying organised trading spaces would enable businesses to operate in safer and more orderly conditions.

He said planning should take into account roads, pedestrian paths and other essential infrastructure to prevent commercial activities from disrupting other users of public spaces.

CP Hamduni stressed that the exercise should move beyond decisions made in meetings and produce tangible and sustainable improvements in the organisation of economic activities and environmental cleanliness.

He also urged traders to comply with government laws, regulations and procedures governing their businesses.

The commissioner directed municipal officials to involve traders in planning the designated areas to ensure they understand the allocated sites and operating procedures.

Meanwhile, Ilemela District Commissioner, Amir Mkalipa said the municipal council had started organising areas for small-scale traders.

He said the exercise was being conducted in collaboration with trader representatives and officers from the Reserve Force to ensure designated areas were used properly and business activities proceeded without conflicts.

Mr Mkalipa said stakeholder participation was important in informing traders about the planned areas and procedures governing their operations.
