Sabalenka battles back as Madrid Open quarter-finals take shape

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka, has fought back from a set and a break down to beat Naomi Osaka of Japan in the fourth round of the Madrid Open, in Spain.

With the three-set victory, Sabalenka kept her hopes alive of becoming the first female player ever to win four titles in the Spanish capital. She will next face American, Hailey Baptiste, in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, Baptiste, beat 11th seeded Swiss, Belinda Bencic in a humdinger of a match. She needed almost three hours, and seven match points, to record a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 upset victory.

Defending men’s champion, Casper Ruud of Norway, had a much easier day on court. The 12th seed secured a straight sets win over local favourite, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Standing between Ruud and a place in the quarter-finals is Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.
